    Unhappy 1861 Census

Hi guys, Im struggling to find a family in the 1861 england census.

The family consists of Jacob Scherp b1825 Prussia
    Mary Scherp b1832 Prussia
    Catherine Scherp b1854 Whitechapel
    Henry Scherp b 1858 London

I have found them in the 1871 census, with their other two sons Charles b1861 and Albert b1863, But I cant find he Scherps in 1861 or in any census' after 1871, presumably with two of the children born in london, and the following two, also I found a bancruptcy notice in 1864 for Jacob listed in Whitechapel, So I presume in 1861 they are there somewhere. Ive tried various spellings, by the time Catherine married and had children her kids GRO said Sharp for mothers name, but no luck with this either, also no luck with birth gro records for the kids. I found a Catherine sharp birth in whitechapel in 1854, however that mothers maiden name was Peel, not very german.

    So a bit confused.

    Lunch beckons!

Just googled Jacob Scherp b 1825 a couple of hits have come up of others looking for the same family of researchers on ancestry boards, one response

My Great Grandfather Jacob (b. 1825) left Germany around 1850 and went to London. He and his wife had 5 or 6 children born in Whitechapel, London and then the family left England for the USA around 1872-3. I also see records for an Adam Scherp in the same section of London during the same time period.

    further reply

Yes, there are some similarities, i.e. Adam, Jacob, farming & Prussia! I don't have a lot of info: my gg parents, Johann Heinrich Scherp & Elizabeth Breuning married at Whitechapel on Jan. 2, 1859 & migrated to New Zealand in 1863, with three children, the third being my g. father Jacob Frederick Scherp b. 1862, London. My g.g.father came from Kassel, Hesse - village just outside Kassel. I will name later. His father was John Adam Scherp, farmer. For some reason the family thought Adam [his brother]migrated with him, but got off the boat earlier. That could have been USA or the confusion may have been from Germany to UK.
You are talking to Melbourne, Australia.

There are a lot of bits missing from the 1861 census. You can check in the catalogue.
