    Default 74th Foot Highlander

    Hi Guys

I am looking for joining up records for John Nelson b 1820 of Paisley, He joined in Glasgow 10th June 1842, #2166 and Joseph Harper of Aidrie joined in Belfast IreLand 23rd Oct 1847 # 1762. I have both of their discharge papers which gave me their numbers etc.
So I am chasing up for their attestation papers if they are on record as I am trying to find their next of kin.

These men spent time in India.

So someone help or guide me to the right direction.

    Many thanks in advance.

    Regards

Hello Tony and welcome to the British-Genealogy forums
If you came to us from Forces War Records reading this will tell you a little about us.

I will take a look around and see if I can find anything but I do believe records are pretty scarce for that earlier period. If I am wrong someone will correct me.

I can't see any attestation for John Nelson yet but was wondering if this could be him after leaving the army. When was he discharged?
1851 census (I can only view the transcription)
    Falkirk
John Nelson 30 Coal Miner born Paisley, Renfrewshire
    Janet 35 Falkirk, Stirling
Peter Jack Nelson 14 son Coal Miner Falkirk, Stirling
James Nelson 9 months Falkirk, Stirling

The ages of anyone over 15 were supposed to be marked down to the nearest 5 and it looks as if these have been otherwise John would be a very young fathre and mother to Peter

If you've found discharge papers (presumably you mean series WO97) that's may be all there is to find.

An attestation document of that vintage is unlikely to mention next of kin.

    Default Joseph HARPER

On the attestation papers, the record indicates that Joseph was underage when signing up!

As you know Joseph on his marriage stated that his father was Joseph.

Again his year of birth is 1829/1830.

The family can be found on the 1871 Scotland census
    Name Joseph Harper
    Event Type Census
    Event Date 1871
    Gender Male
    Age 41
    Birthplace Lanarkshire
