I have a photograph of my great grandma Harriet Luty stood at the back of the inn she ran with my grandad Joseph Fieldhouse Luty but unfortunately the name on the pub sign has disappeared (eroded over time I think?). The address given on the Census for 1911 is 8 Bradford Road, Idle, Bradford and his occupation was given as Innkeeper. However, I live quite close to this village and when I went to see if I could find the pub there is a gap where it once stood. Does anyone know how I can find out the name of the pub? Are there records kept of Licensed Victuallers dating back that far? Any help with this would be most appreciated!

An address search of the 1901 census records 8 Bradford Road, Idle, as The Orangeman Inn.

The Registers of Licensed Victuallers are an excellent resource and easy to use. Try the record office.

Ancestry has 'West Yorkshire, England, Alehouse Licences, 1771-1962' Unfortunately I didn't find any reference to the Orangeman, or Orange Man.

The Leeds Mercury, 1 Jun 1911, reported that 10 pubs at Thornton and Idle were to close, following objections to the renewal of the licence. Amongst those listed was the "Orangeman, Idle". The ten were to be submitted for compensation.
On 3 Oct 1912 the same paper reported the compensation awarded eg "The Orangeman Inn, Idle, £990 (owner £815, tenant £175)""dyfal donc a dyr y garreg"
