Glad to be of help, even if somewhat minimal, Barbara. I think the certificates are the only way to go especially as we can find no census records to tie the information together.

Should have been more aware of what Dundee posted:

1891 census of Hulme, Manchester (RG12/3197, folio 35A, page 24) living at 27 Carlisle Street:

Thos Fred ROOKE Head Mar 40 Porter Birmingham
Mary E do Wife Mar 40 Lancs Manchester
Maud do Daur 12 Scholar do do
Beatrice do Daur 10 do do do
Mary do Daur 9 do do do
James E do Son 6 do do do
Ethel do Daur 4 do do do
Edith do Daur 2 do do

So these presumably are the James Edward DEARDEN & Ethel DEARDEN who were witnesses at Mary's marriage - thanks to Dundee for putting my mind back on track!

The family are still living in Hulme in the 1901 census (RG13/3702, folio 61, page 20), Thos Frederick now being described as a Commercial Clerk and they are living at 29 Patchett Street.

Am much happier now that the census records tie in with the information already found but purchasing the certificates is now the way to go.

    Bit more information:

1871 census of Hulme (RG10/4003, folio 58, pages 15/16) living at 7 Gorse Street:

Elizabeth WAINWRIGHT Head W 41 Housekeeper Lancashire Preston
Mary E do Daur 20 Milliner do Chorlton on Medlock
James C do Son U 18 Clerk do do
Joshua do Son U 16 Farm Servant do do
    Elizabeth W do Daur 11
Alice Turner do Daur 7 do Manchester
Clara E BANNER? Nurse child 2 do do
John DEARDEN Nephew Mar 21 Tailors Cutter do Burnley

Hopefully the married bit against John DEARDEN is incorrect or he most likely committed bigamy! So it looks as if the WAINWRIGHTs & the DEARDENs were related in some way.

Barbara, if you can access Ancestry there are some documents there on a Family Tree regarding John Rawlinson DEARDEN including his birth certificate - his mother is shown as Betty DEARDEN.

My heavens, it looks as if John DEARDEN was a serial offender. First convicted in 1871, another conviction in 1872 for which he received 10 years penal servitude, then a further conviction in 1882 for embezzlement for which he received another 10 years. If you can access FindmyPast, these records are available to view, but a couple of them also appear on Ancestry via the same Family Tree as the birth certificate. Could explain why Mary Ellen was living with Thos Frederick ROOKE in subsequent census records.
