Welcome to the British-Genealogy forums.
The title of your post says Boer War pensioner but then you say he was born 1820 and died 1885. The Boer wars were 1899-1902 so your man died before they started.
You have the names of his children of the first marriage from the South African Settlers site ? Arthur, William, Emily, Isabella, Mary, Alice, Louisa, George. Are there any birth certificates of these children available that give the mother's maiden name?
There is a probate record for an Elizabeth Howe nee Marr on familysearch.org. She died 15 April 1884 and was the wife of Solomon Howe and lived at Knight Street Old de Beer which is the address on Solomon's death record on familysearch.
Children of this marriage
Mary Elizabeth age 28
Arthur Squire Solomon age 23
Alice Mari(a)n 19
Louisa Jane 17
Robert Henry (Brett?) 14
Christina

There was an earlier war, known as the First Anglo-Boer War from Dec 1880-1881 which the British lost. It's still a bit late for him to have been much involved - he would have been about 60 at the start.
FMP has a birth registration for a Solomon Howe in 1857 in Hayfield, Derbyshire who might be worth following up.

When searching do not discount Mellor which is currently Cheshire but in the 1800/1900's was Derbyshire

British Army Worldwide Index dated 1851 for a Sol HOWE who was a Private, Service No 2095, in the 6th Regiment of Foot (Royal First Warwickshire) in Kings William Town. Could he be your Solomon HOWE?
