Could anyone do a look-up for me? My ancestor John Jackson was born in 1837 Carlisle Cumberland England. His mother Hannah Jackson never married John's father. I can't figure out how to find the information. tahnk you, Bonney

Bastardy bonds are held by the various parishes See this guide
And The National Archives list of parishes and where the records can be found - here
Remember that if the mother didn't seek help from the parish there may be no record of a bastardy bond

In 1837 the New Poor Law was in operation.

For an explanation, see https://www.workhouses.org.uk/poorlaws/newpoorlaw.shtml in particular the paragraph on the Bastardy Clause.

First place to look is the records of the Board of Guardians for the relevant union
