My grandfather is named William Stafford Murphy I have all his war records from WW1. The family story goes his friend John Gervase Maurice Walker is killed beside him in WW1, he then goes on to name his eldest son after his departed friend. I have searched in vain for any war record of John Gervase Maurice Walker. William also known as Billy served in the 6th and 8th battalion of the Leicestershire regiment. Again according to family lore he applied for the Leinsters and by an admin error entered the Leicestershire's.
Can anybody help?

Searching Ancestry & FMP using the alternative names brings up more records.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) has his record Here Free to search
ancestry and Findmypast are pay per view sites but both have a free service in some public libraries. It may be worth seeing if yours has it.

Hi
National Archives UK = https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
His medal index card is there- also on Ancestry or FMP
Service records are there -
https://discovery.nationalarchives.go...ils/r/C1082642
But not online, don't ask for a copy, they charge expensively. You can either go there to view it or get someone to photo them for a cheaper cost.

There is an "In memoriam" notice in the same paper, 1925, "... killed in action at Zwartemolenhoek, Neuve Eglise, 15 April 1918".
