    Default Death overseas.

Between 1848 and 1851 HMS Acheron was engaged in surveying the coastal waters of New Zealand. On 3 February 1850 a member of the crew died and was buried in Wellington.

Apart from on his tombstone and in the ship's log, where would his death be registered? No trace has been found in either NZ or U K BMD records.

    U K BMD records.
By "UK BMD records" are you including the Royal Navy returns in various series in class ADM? These are online on Findmypast included in a dataset named "Deaths At Sea, 1781-1968"

Searching around I found this on Rootsweb
"NZ BDMs is indexed from 1848 up. If the person you are looking for cannot be found and the event took place in the 1850s or earlier, it is possible that they are on the NSW Index instead even though the event took place in New Zealand."

Here is The National Archives research guide for BMD's at sea.

    I have a similar problem.
Charles Boxall died at sea September 1865 and was buried at Jackson Bay, South Westland.
There is a probate but I cannot find a death certificate.

There are three results for Charles Boxall in Deaths At Sea, 1781-1968 on FMP but none of them are your man as the dates of death are 2 in 1906 and one in 1914

Thank you for looking. I have searched high and low for his death record. I have all the newspaper reports but no certificate!

My thanks to all who have shown an interest and responded.

George Gardener Pashbee was baptised in Falmouth on 19 January 1810, son of Samuel and Sarah. He died on 3February 1850 whilst serving on HMS Acheron and was buried in Wellington, N Z.

I have abstracted most of the details of his life from on-line. My objective now is to determine if/where his death is registered, and I am particularly grateful to Peter and Christina for their advice/suggestions. Thank you again.

If you google the ship you will find that the log etc are held in NZ
