Default proof of Gt Gt Grandmother.

I am trying to find proof that my Great Grandmothers mother was Lydia Burgess. Gt Grandmother's name was Sarah Clark born about 1844 Much Hadham. Hertfordshire, Father Thomas Clark born about 1818. I have looked at other trees on Ancestry and cannot find proof that Burgess was the last name. I have found a marriage of Thomas Clark and Lydia Burgess for 1843 registration district Bishop Stortford which covers Much Hadham. It's the only one i can find for that village. As i have found no birth record for Sarah can i take it that there was only one Thomas Clark and that's the one who married Lydia. I'm being extra cautious because of the common name.

i have found no birth record for Sarah

    I can see two possibles

    Births Mar 1844
CLARKE Sarah Bishops Stortford 6 529 (Mother = Notteye)
    Births Mar 1845
CLARK Sarah Emma Bps Stortford 6 534 (Mother = Burgess)

Have you looked at the PRs?

Sarah Emma Clark's parents were Thomas and Lydia.

It looks as if the mother was Lydia Burgess but you should get the birth certificate to confirm. Ignore other people's trees.

can i take it that there was only one Thomas Clark
Not without more research. Have a look at the 1851 census. I can only see one Thomas Clark in Much Hadham in the index but I haven't worked all the way through the enumeration book (there seems to be only one).

There are 2 baptismal records on FMP (transcriptions only) -

    1. Sarah Emma Clark, bap 2 March 1845, residence - Great Hadham, place - Great Hadham, parents - Thomas and Lydia Clark

    2. The second doesn't record "Residence" but "Place" = Much Hadham
"dyfal donc a dyr y garreg"

It isn't Sarah Clarke as her Father is George . My Sarah's father was definitely Thomas as stated on her marriage certificate.
As far as i can see there was no other Thomas at the time. The only one i can find married Lydia.
    Thank you for your help.

Thank you for your help. I can only find one Thomas Clark. I know it was Thomas as it's stated on Sarah's marriage certificate.

Up until now i've only had to deal with less common names so wanted to make sure that i was on the right track. I know when it's a common name how many there can be in a village. Thank you. You as always have been most helpful.

You can say that again. I have never got any farther back than my husbands 3rd Gt Grandfather Thomas Kitchen born about 1785 in Kirby Londsdale.
