    Default John REID b Glasgow c1881, m London - WW1

    This man enlisted as CLARKE in 1901, declared his real name as REID in 1906, and served with a mixture of both names. He is filed as CLARKE in the WW1 Service Records (WO 363):

    John REID, joined the RHA/RFA on 1 May 1901, at Liverpool, declaring age 19y 9m, born Glasgow.
    Married Ethel May HOSKINS in 1910 (GRO shows marriage in Kensington district).

    Awarded the DCM in 1919 (for action in April 1918), served until 1919, discharged 1920. Regt No 16912.

    There's a John J Reid aged 32 in the 1911 for Southgate, b. Glasgow, wife Ethel M Reid, 28, Islington, married less than 1 year (1910). It sounds like him, but he's a chartered accountant!

    Mind you, I see that he was transferred to the Reserve in 1909, and then mobilized in 1914... Was 2 years long enough to qualify as a chartered accountant back then?
    I see that his mobilization papers are remarkably illegible about his qualifications...

    There were 36 John Reids born Glasgow 1881+/-2.
