    Escaped Lunatic, 1869

    Esacaped, on the 3rd instant, from the Hospital for the Insane Gladesville, William Smart, a lunatic, about 60yrs of age 5 feet 7 inches high, broad set, grey hair, sallow complexion, face large, and features coarse; countenance expressive of self opinion, but not ill humour; dressed in monkey jacket and felt hat, marked 2, a labourer, but can work at tailoring; his friends reside at Gundagai.

    There is a UK Prison Hulk Register aboard the Ganymede for a William SMART received from Lancaster Castle on 4 June 1824. He is shown as aged 20, convicted of stealing 134 Notes & Pocket Book, convicted at Salford on 3 May 1824 and sentenced to life. He appears to tie in with the records Christina has found for you. However, like Jean, I cannot find any information in Manchester prior to his conviction.
