Default Herbert SPARROW married 1904 as CLARKE - WW1

I am 99% certain that this is correct, but I have been known to be wrong .... :

    From the WW1 Service Records (WO 363) - CLARKE, Herbert Sparrow enlisted in January 1913 & was de-mobbed in 1919. (36714 R Fusiliers; 79154 Middlesex; 447546 ASC).

    Home address: Southall/Acton, London.
Declared age in Jan 1913: 32y 4m (so born c1883, Gorleston, Norfolk).
Married Great Yarmouth, 1904: Emma Barker RANT.

    He married as Herbert CLARKE.
He served as Herbert Sparrow CLARKE.
Was he born as Herbert SPARROW? (There is no suitable birth for H S CLARKE)

They are on the 1911 as Clarke, he's a brickie..
    There's a dozen Herbert Sparrows b.1883 +/- 2y, but only 1 Norfolk boy - b. Yarmouth, son of William & Harriet.

FreeBMD gives her surname as Rant or Raut.

I am thinking maybe William Clarke got himself put in prison and then changed his name. Any records on ancestry between 1875 and 1881?
