When I was searching last night I did wonder if Richard Thomas was perhaps born before Mary married John Thomas, there's about a five year age gap between Richard and Edward Griffith, of course one reason for the gap could be that Mary and John had babies/a baby who died in infancy. Finding Richard in 1891 would help, but with so many possibilities it could take some time.

Sometimes when you are looking for “missing” children they can be there under your noses ‘mis-recorded’. For years I could not find one of my great uncles in the 1901 census. His name was Thomas Llewellyn Roberts born in 1888, but he was also known as Jim, and at 12/13 years old he was old enough to be working away from home, so when after having done a number of fruitless searches I had given up.
Then quite a long time later I had turned my attention to his mother’s family the Evans’ and eventually ‘twigged’ that a lot of them were occupying the same terrace of houses, where my great-grandparents were. My great grandparents were at number 14 with 6 children, and they appear right at the bottom of RG13; Piece: 5268; Folio: 127; Page: 15, so I was page turning that part of the census to see if I could spot any of her siblings in the rest of the terrace, and over the page in the next door house who did I see listed as a visitor? A 2 year old Thomas Ll Roberts. Mystery solved.

Register: Marriages 1878 - 1900, Page 95, Entry 190
Source: Original Registers at Leigh
Mary was born at Bodedern Anglesey N Wales
Searching the 1871 Wales census in the village of Bodedern produces
RG10; Piece: 5751; Folio: 24; Page: 7
LLANFROG
Griffith Roberts 38
Magaret Roberts 35
Griffith Roberts 12
Thomas Roberts 10
Margaret Roberts 8
Mary Roberts 5
Elen Roberts 3
Cathrine Roberts 9 Months
Looking at the witnesses, these could be Margaret her mother re married following the death of her father, or Margaret her sister.
It is not unusual for Jones to marry Jones / Roberts to marry Roberts.
Family History in that part of N Wales is usually passed on verbally....

The eldest child appears to be Griffith Roberts circa 1859, ironically a search for the mothers maiden name brings up 3 hits...ALL with the maiden name of JONES

As somebody with family from that part of the world, and still living there, I think that statement is an erroneous assumption that does not sit well with all other good research that you do. Just because there are common names which makes life difficult does not make it impossible.

I've moved your query re Edward CHALLINOR to its own thread which can be found here in the General Family History Queries forum.
As Janet correctly pointed out Edward has no connection to Mary Roberts, so he needs his own thread.
Thank you to Janet for alerting the mods.
And a 'well-spotted' thanks to Dundee10 who moved their post to the new thread. (Saved me a job!)
