Default Edgar Lay, b 1907, Leeds

I am currently staying with a friend in New Zealand's South Island and she has asked for help trying to discover her ancestors and have run out of ideas in tracing her father's ancestors.

From her father's birth certificate we have the following details:
    DoB - 29 June 1907
    Name - Edgar
Name of father - Edgar Lay
Name of mother - Ann Payne formerly Holson (on the GRO it was entered as HOLTON)
Address - 23 Recovery Street, Leeds

I cannot find Edgar's parents on either the 1901 or 1911 censuses.
My friend informs me that Edgar's surname became PAYNE!
So was Edgar born out of wedlock?
I cannot find any marriages of Lay/Payne or Payne/Holson.

On our friend's maternal line I have traced the ancestors back to the 1841 census but the paternal line has me confused.

I need a fresh set of eyes to resolve this puzzle.

    Thanks
    David

So was Edgar born out of wedlock?
That's correct. The parents were not married.

As is usual in these circumstances, the birth is indexed under both PAYNE and LAY. This is simply to help you find the certificate.

In the 1911 census, Edgar appears to be living with the family under the surname PAYNE. There are other children, their birth certificates might be interesting.

Many, many thanks. You have confirmed some of our friend's (Hilary) memories. At the moment she is trying to remember some of her aunt and uncles marriages - gets difficult when one gets past 70 years old !!!

    1901 Census RG13/2986 f 117 p 22

Edgar Lay is with an Emma Lay and a son, Walter. In 1911, Emma is working as a housekeeper and Walter is with her.

It looks as if Edgar did a runner from Emma, took up with Ann and changed his name to avoid various possible complications.
