    Default Norway Liberation

My father served on HMS VIVIEN, COCHRANE, PEMBROKE and VALKYRIE from February to September 1945. Were any of these ships helping with the liberation of Norway? Arthur Frank FARMER (able seaman) radio operator.

Keith, welcome to the British Genealogy Forum.

As far as I can see, the full deployments of all of these ships can be found on the Naval History site HERE . The search box is on the left of the screen, but it's a good idea to select your time period first.

If you arrived here from FWR, the message HERE will explain how you ended up with us.

I may well be proved wrong because I know next to nothing about the navy but according to Wikipedia, COCHRANE, PEMBROKE and VALKYRIE were shore establishments.

Do you mean the FWR site or the Naval History one that I suggested?

H.m.s.Vivien was a destroyer, Pembroke was Chatham Depot, Cochrane Rosyth Depot, Valkyrie Isle of Man Depot, all shore base, stone ships, you need to trace Vivien to find your man at sea, my own father was a Chatham rating, home base Pembroke, but served at Rosyth, mainly submarine depot during the war, and sometime at Scapa Flow before joining the Far East Fleet, Dad was in from 1939 to 1947. Valkyrie was mainly a signals training depot. radio operator would have been trained there,

The only mention of Norway for H.M.S. Vivien, 10th April 1940 she left Rosyth on convoy escort to Norway, most of the war was spent on North Sea convoy escort for this destroyer.
