Hi I am wondering if at all I would be able to find information on Edward Evans born Wrexham abt 1855 who appears on the UK deserters list. Have found that he was with the Royal Artillery at Horfield # 5163.
Looked at a few places but unable to find any military record for him. Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Peter, thanks for replying. I found the record on UK military Deserters on Ancestry. I take it that he was AWOL for a period as there are five records relating to Edward with different Desertion Dates. It was published in the Police Gazette and found it on another site. The "regimental" number is on the information document. Also gives the Military Corps: Royal Artillery and Desertion place - Horfield.

Welcome to the Brit-Gen forums kiwibarb
If you came to us from Forces War Records then reading this will tell you a little about us and what we do.
Edward Evans certainly didn't like being in the army in 1878 did he? I wonder if he had met his wife and was absent so he could see her.
Is it only his army record you are interested in or his family background as well.

Hi, Christina,
Nice to hear from a fellow Kiwi. Yes came via Forces war records, so will read the info you have directed me to. No Edward didn't like being in the army much s0 wonder why he joined up?? Guess job security at that time.
It is only the army record if at all I can get it that far back. Additional family background would be a bonus as well. He has been a bit of a mystery researching him and thought there may be information in his record as to DOB or parents names, which may lead me to other sibblings although I do have his father's name, Thomas Evans. Trying to research Evans in Wales is something of a challenge. I have him from 1891 onward and through to his death and of course all his children which included my grandfather.
Thanks have a great day.

There is an Edward Evans in the 1861 census with parents Jane and Thomas.
registration district Wrexham
Can't read address - Gresford
Thomas Evans farmer Gresford, Denbighshire
Jane wife Gresford, Denbighshire
Robert 13 Gresford, Denbighshire
Edward 7 Gresford, Denbighshire
Eliza 7 Gresford, Denbighshire
So I tried looking for the birth of an Eliza and an Edward with the same mother's maiden surname on the GRO index but as I am supposed to be doing some painting I am not concentrating. Be back later

Hi Christina,
Thanks for taking the time to look this up. I wish I could say yes, that is him, but I just have no idea. He was born about 1855-60 and suspect is nearer the 1855. His death certificate has him as 55 at his death in 1915 but suspect that is incorrect.
Beautiful day here too so need to spend the time outside. Back to it later like you.
Enjoy the day.
Regards
Barbara

Ancestry links 5163 from the Deserters List to the son of David & Mary E, b. in Ruabon, Denbighshire, but it's not clear what they base this on. He's a coal miner.
In the 1861, they're all living in Ruabon, Wrexham.
How sure are ou that the father is Thomas?
