Thanks Christina. Yes, I guess the name Sollars could have come from anywhere and probably isn't important then. When you say you would be looking at Reginald's father's family links, how do you reckon more info there would help? Thanks

    Hi
What I mean is that if you want to know where and why Reginald picked the surname Sollars to use on his marriage certificate then the connection may be with his father's family links as Sollars is a name more popular in Gloucestershire and George was born in Gloucestershire.
I did notice when searching the other day that there were a few Sollars in Yorkshire but I can't remember if it was the censuses or the 1939 register I saw them on.
This wouldn't help with knowing why Reginald chose to marry not using the surname Jones. Maybe search the newspapers of the time, just in case.

I’ve done some Sollars research and look what I’ve found…. In a nutshell I think George Jones and George William Edward Sollars are the same person.

    Here we go…

*NB. William is the name George Jones gave to his 1st child with Margaret, and Edward is George Sollars’ middle name on Reginald’s marriage cert*

    Birth record:
    George William Edward Sollars
    Baptism year 1863
    Baptism date 04 Jan 1863
Baptism place Bristol, Temple, Gloucestershire, England
    Father Samuel Sollars
    Mother Sarah Ann Sollars

    1st Marriage record:
    GEORGE WILLIAM E SOLLARS
    Q3, 1883
MarriageFinder™ GEORGE WILLIAM E SOLLARS married one of these people
    Maria Hawker, Caroline Anne Smith
    Bristol, Gloucestershire, England
    Volume 6A, Page 113

    Death record:
    GEORGE W E SOLLARS
    Birth year 1863
    Age 69
    Q2 1932
    Hull, Yorkshire
    Volume 9D, Page 306

Stick with this, but I feel this 1901 census is correct:

    1901 census:
27, Quarella Street, Barry, Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales

So there is a move from Bristol (where 1911 census says he was born) to Wales - i.e. where he possibly then meets Margaret (on 1911 census it says she was born in Wales) and she gave birth to their 1st son, William, in Cardiff.

George Jones is on that 1901 census as a general labourer - there are other general labourers living in that house and the head of the household is also a general labourer. They are all from England. On Reginald’s birth certificate (which I now have) in 1905, it says his father George Jones, was a general labourer.

Back to George Sollars. George is here (it says married) in 1881, living with his mother, his father is dead. Also living with him is his son and his brother and 2 sisters.

    1881 census
Glass House Court, Bristol Temple, Bristol, Gloucestershire.
Sarah A Sollars Head. Widow. Female. 41. 1840. Laundress. Clifton, Gloucestershire.
George W Sollars. Son. Married. Male 18. 1863. Warehouseman. Bristol, Gloucestershire.
Henry Sollars. Son Single. Male 8. 1873. Scholar. Bristol, Gloucestershire.
Adelaide Sollars. Daughter. Single. Female 6. 1875. Scholar. Bristol, Gloucestershire.
Edith Sollars Daughter. Single. Female 4. 1877. Scholar. Bristol, Gloucestershire.
Sarah Jewson Boarder Single Female 64. 1817. Nurse (S M). Bristol, Gloucestershire.
Albert Ed Sollars. Grson. Single Male 0. 1881 - Bristol, Gloucestershire

Then in 1883 there is a marriage to Caroline Anne Smith

    1st Marriage record:
    GEORGE WILLIAM E SOLLARS
    Q3, 1883
MarriageFinder™ GEORGE WILLIAM E SOLLARS married one of these people
    Maria Hawker, Caroline Anne Smith
    Bristol, Gloucestershire, England
    Volume 6A, Page 113

Then in 1891, he is living as the head, with his son and 2 sisters from the previous census, and his wife Caroline, a step-son, 3 sons and 2 daughters.

    1891 census
Corbett Street, St George, Barton Regis, Gloucestershire, England
Edith T Sollars Sister Female 13. 1878. Haymaker. Bedminster, Somerset.
William Smith. Stepson. Single Male. 18. 1873 . General Laborer Bedminster, Somerset.

Then, by 1901, they had moved to Wales.

1901 census: (Here you can see his middle name is Edward, like on Reginald’s birth cert)
52, Cyfarthfa Street, Roath, Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales
Geo Wm Edw Sollars Head. Married Male. 38. 1863 Railway Goods Guard Bristol, Gloucestershire.
Nellie Sollars Daughter. Single Female 15. 1886. Domestic Servant. Bristol, Gloucestershire.
Fredk James Sollars. Son. Single. Male. 11. 1890. Bath, Somerset.
Beatrice Sollars. Niece. Single. Female 4. 1897. Bristol, Gloucestershire.

I actually think this other 1901 census is ALSO him, now deciding he is George Jones, perhaps living with a friend who also gave him work as a labourer? I think in 1901 he separated from his wife and he is here:

1901 census where he is George Jones.
27, Quarella Street, Barry, Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales

There doesn’t seem to be a death record for George Sollars in Cardiff by the way, and I found THIS in 1906:

    Marriage record:
    CAROLINE ANNIE SOLLARS
    Q2 1906
    Registration month -
MarriageFinder™ CAROLINE ANNIE SOLLARS married one of these people
    William Joseph Skinner, Albert Milford
    Cardiff,Glamorganshire, Wales
    Volume 11A, Page 755

Then I found the 1911 census for Caroline Skinner, with her youngest son only (Frederick Sollars) living with her.

    1911 census:

4 Aberdovey St Splott Cardiff, Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales
William Joseph Skinner Head. Married Male. General Labourer. 54 1857. London Bermondsey.

Here is the 1911 census I knew about with George and Margaret Jones, with their 2 sons, William and Reginald:

George Jones. Head. Married Male. Marine Stoker. 48. 1863. Bristol Glostershire.
Margaret. Jones. Wife. Married Female. 34. 1877. Macoy Crommer Moor (*Maesycwmmer, Mon(mouthshire)*) Wales.
William Jones, Son, Male. School. 7. 1904. Cardiff Glam
Wyndham Jones, Son, Male, School. 5, 1906, Hull Yorks

I still need to try to find a marriage record for George and Margaret - maybe she had also been married before? I’ve got myself confused searching for this. Anyone else got any ideas?

What does anyone think about the Sollars connection research?

Back to Margeret (my grandmother, the one born 1923)

So I received the will. He is there as Reginald Wyndham Jones and he left money to: his wife after Hilda died: Ivy Winifred Jones, his daughter: Margaret Ingram, my dad and my uncle.

NB. At the time Reginald died, Margaret had (the year before) married again, so her surname was Thorne in 1982.

Margaret married twice after divorcing my grandfather, Roger Féat.

    Her 3 marriages are here:

    Her death is here:

    Birth month 12
    Birth year 1923 Q2
    Death year 1985

I forked out and ordered the above marriage certs and death cert, in case they reveal a different maiden name for Margaret, other than Jones.

Anyone got any thoughts on either the George Jones/Sollars research or the Margaret whatever-her-surname-is (born 1923), research?

I'll leave Alma to do the double-checking as I'm in the middle of some major work for myself and daren't lose my train of thought, but a quick read-through of it sounds good to me.
Definitely gold star level detective work.

It looks good to me, Pascale. Well done Investigating, solving, and getting to the bottom of it must have given you a (well deserved) sense of achievement. As Pam said "Definitely gold star level detective work"

When Ethel May Sollars married John Humphreys June 25 or 26 1902 at Roath Parish Church the witnesses were: George W E Sollars and Clara Sollars.
