    Default COOTE, Isaac Sudbury Suffolk

Convicted of house breaking and transported to Tasmania. Prior conviction of "refusing to fulfil his contract to work up a cane of Mantua silk" Does anyone know what this means. Does it have a connection with tailoring?

    Thanks

It would appear that a cane is a length of silk equal to four palms. How long this is I don't know.

Mantua silk seems to be a silk, often dyed black for mourning, used to make a Mantua or form of over dress.

The Surname Interests forum is intended for people to register their interests in a name, not for queries and research threads. It automatically locks itself so the people can't join in, so I am moving this to the "Occupations" forum.
