Are the medals that you have like the ones in the link I sent you?
Whether they are hers or another relative's, they're worth researching...

Was McKenzie your Gran's maiden name? Could she have been a nurse?

FindmyPast, a pay per view site, has the service record for John McKENZIE, no 2747, which runs to several pages. Can't give you full details because of their terms & conditions, but he was living in Fort William when he enlisted.

Could Jessie have been John's sister? 1871 census of High St, Kilmallie, Inverness shows an Alexander & Isabell McKENZIE living with children Jessie, John, Alexander & Donald. 1881 census shows the family, minus Jessie, but plus a son Duncan and a daughter Helen living at High Street, Fort William.

1881 census of Fort William shows Jessie McKENZIE as an unmarried Domestic Servant living at Ashwood Cottage in the household of John WATSON & family.
