Default FIELD Edward James born 1821

    Hi
I am trying to find any records of Edward James Field whose gravestone found in Kingwilliamstown, South Africa, which shows he was born on 18 February 1821 in Essex (https://www.eggsa.org/library/main.php?g2_itemId=1354469) He was born just after the 1820 settler period and was likely to be related to an independent settler who would have emigrated in the period 1821 onwards.

In 1853 he married Sarah Hobbs, who was a child settler of 1820, at Bathurst, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Edward James's South African descendants are well documented but no reference can be found of his birth or baptism records or his parents.

    Can anyone help?

    Paul

    Hello Paul,

    Welcome to British-Genealogy.

Is it just me not being able to read the gravestone very well, or does it really not say anything about Essex on it?
If so, where does the 'of Essex' information come from?

I know zilch about South African marriage or death certificates, so I presume there are no clues to be found on those documents.

I'm assuming there is evidence for Edward having a middle name as it's not on his gravestone.

I can answer your questions! Essex comes from his death notice

The middle name appears on parish registers, such as the baptism of their children Joseph and Edward

Edward Field actually appears on my tree because his wife Sarah Hobbs was a daughter of my 3xgreat grandfather Philip Hobbs, but I have never been able to find out more about him (though I confess I haven't tried that hard as he's not my direct line and not an actual 1820 settler). Paul contacted me privately and I advised him to ask for help on this great forum

    Hi Pam and Sue

Thank you for such prompt replies and clearing up any confusion.

I also stated that Sarah Hobbs was an 1820 child settler. This is incorrect, sorry, she was born in Bathurst 9 Apr 1932.

I shouldn't take the mickey, but are you sure you're clearing up the confusion?
