This is not a new thread, but a continuation of a previous one. I couldn't see how to continue without "replying", which is not what I'm going to do.
So, an update really, and a request for more help!
I have the marriage certificate for Frederick John McKay and Sarah Flora Knights, on which the groom's father is given as Alexander McKay, a coach smith.
I have found Alexander Mckay in 1871 in London, in the Workhouse but never after that. So I assume he died not long after. His wife Emma/Jane Mckay is a widow after this too.
I would like to look in Scottish records for Alexander, maybe in the house of a father with a similar occupation.
Can anyone help me there?
Also the marriage certificate gives one of the witnesses as Alfred Knapp. I think this witness may have been a friend of Frederick John, maybe from his youth, i.e. born in London?
Any ideas anyone?

I've re-titled this thread 'Alexander McKay father of Frederick John'.
This is because you're mainly asking for information about Alexander now, not Frederick John.
It avoids confusion with your other thread about Frederick.

Images for Scottish records (census, BMD, baptists, and burials) are only available on Scotland's People, a pay-as-you-view site.
FMP and Ancestry have transcriptions for the Scottish census.
FreeCEN has some of the census, but they are not complete. https://www.freecen.org.uk/
FreeREG has some Scottish parish registers, but I haven't checked for coverage. https://www.freereg.org.uk/

Alexander McKay in Scotland
I've found a family which may be Alexander's in Elgin, Morayshire, Scotland, using FreeCEN. The only parameters I could use were his name and Coach Smith as occupation.
I found Alexander McKay in 1851 as an unmarried son 17 and an apprentice coach painter. He was living with his mother father, and sister.
In 1841 the same family were at the same address. Alexander was 8 and living with his father, mother and sister. A lodger was also in the house. His father was a labourer.
In 1861 Alexander was 28 and a coach painter and journeyman. His mother was now a widow. His brother was still at home and unmarried. Address was 9 Batchen street, 1 room.
In 1871 Alexander was not present, which would fit with him being in London by then. His mother was a widow and an annuitant. His brother was given as lodger. Address was still 9 Batchen street, 2 rooms
Do you think this is enough to go on? Or is the coach painter/ coach smith too loose a link?
Looking forward to any advice!

FamilySearch.org is a reasonable index to the pre-1875 Church of Scotland records, but you'd still need to go to Scotlands People for the actual entries.
I've put a collection of threads about scottish sources, etc, at the head of the General Scottish forum HERE. The Scotlands People one needs a bit of updating, though.
