A few pages perhaps mis-filed in the CLA section of the WW1 Service Records (WO 363):

Edward BARNES of Cheetham Hill, Manchester was "thrown out" by his wife in October 1936 - she wouldn't let him back in the house. So he applied for a copy of his Discharge Certificate. He claimed to be 66y in 1937, so born c1871 (London)?

He had served as Edward CLARKE (Pte 6802 KLR) from March 1900 until he went AWOL in April 1901. ("Protecting Certificate" issued in 1937).

He served as Edward BARNES (Pte 13010 KLR & 616079 Labour) from August 1914 to 1919.

It is unclear which is his birth-name, but evident that he uses BARNES post-war. Perhaps this will ring a bell for a descendant?
