Mis-filed in the WW1 Service Records (WO 363) because this 16-year old lad signed up using his cousin's name ... and died aged 16y 10m. There are some heartbreaking letters from his father - a Royal Navy Leading Stoker - who didn't know that his son had joined up, and then had difficulty convincing the authorities that he should be kept informed ...

Arthur Robert HILSON, (born Portsea 1898), joined the Kings Royal Rifles in Birmingham in August 1914, as Daniel Clarke, declared age 19y 48d. Pte 1109, missing in action May 1915.

Father: Arthur J HILSON, Leading Stoker RN, HMS Kite, Portsmouth. Post-war address: Sparkbrook, Birmingham.
Mother: dead. Stepmother living in Sparkbrook, possibly with her sister Dorothy CLARKE (mother of the "real" Daniel, a butcher).
