The 1939 register states Winifred M Foreman .
The Foreman has been struck through and Gray written above in a different coloured ink.
I think the name Gray is added after marraige.I am sure someone will correct me if this isn't the case.

As the marriage reg definately states 1944 I would say she was single in 1939. There was an Arthur N Gray 1917 also living in Newmarket in 1939.

FMP explanation about 1939 Register. It is the only record between 1921 & 1951 census ( 1931 was lost /1941 not taken) Hopefully this does not infringe FMP t&c!)

In December 1938 it was announced in the House of Commons that in the event of war, a National Register would be taken that listed the personal details of every civilian in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This Register was to be a critical tool in coordinating the war effort at home. It would be used to issue identity cards, organise rationing and more.

My understanding that ID cards were amended on marriage or name change, which resulted in the register being amended, certainly my late mother's 2 married surnames are recorded, one marriage in 1944 the other 1948
