Its been a while but I'm back doing the history again! You were all very helpful before so here goes.
I'm looking to hopefully find some new leads and to confirm or reject some of the info that I have so any advice or pointers would be much appreciated.
It's those darned HAWK(E)'s again - there are so many and the spelling keeps changing. Here is what I think I know.
Bessie HAWK(E) b Q4 1871 St. Dominick (cannot find a baptism for her checked Cornwall opc & DHFS)
The 1871 census (RG10/2233) shows the following (with a transcription error of HAWK
Household Members:
Name Age
John R Hauke 36
Thomasine Hauke 25
Mary A Hauke 6
Jonefer Hauke 1
These are the parents and Sisters of Bessie who has not been born yet. Both children are listed with Stoke Climsland as a place of birth.
The 1881 census (RG11/2283)
Household Members:
Name Age
Mary Hawk 44
John R. Hawk 45
Jenifer Hawk 11
Bessie Hawk 9
Sister Mary is no longer there (she would have been 16 so maybe in service somewhere?)
Both Jenifer and Bessie are now shown as born St. Dominick. The Census suggests that they moved from Saltash Rd Callington to Eastcott (St. Dominick) It is likely that Bessies was born at Eastcott and Jenifer was in Callington.
The other thing that I would like to know is my Mary A HAWK(E) the same Mary HAWK that married Henry HADLEY ? I have found a marriage at Stoke Damerel but is this the same Mary Hawke?
Thank you in advance for your help.

From the GRO index- Bessie Hawke birth registration district Liskeard December 1/4 1871 vol 5c page 55 mother's maiden name Pengelly.
marriage John R Hawke to Thomazine Pengelly March 1/4 1866 Launceston registration district vol 5c page 51
So is Thomazine calling herself Mary in the 1881 census? I can't see a second marriage for John R before 1881 census or a death for Thomasine prior to 1881
I am not quite sure exactly what information you are wanting?

Jenefer's birth reg is Dec 1/4 1869 Launceston registration district mother's maiden name Pengelly vol 5c page 31
It is looking very possible that Mary Ann was born prior to the marriage and her birth is registered in her mother's maiden name of Pengelly. Whether she is the child of John R Hawke? Do you have her baptism?

Ah, what you didn't give were the relationships in the 1881 census and Mary is actually John R's sister. John and his 2 daughters are living with her but he is down as married, and a retired farmer. RG11 Piece 2283 Folio 67 Page 11

Have been wondering what happened to Thomasine and this one matches her birthdate and also has a George born Callington as in the 1901 census.
1891 RG12 Piece 1809 Folio 23 Page 40
Kingston. Callington
Thomasine Hawke 45 South Petherwin, Cornwall
Mary Ann hawke 25 dau Stoke Climsland
Annie Hawk 15 Calstock
George Hawke 8 Callington,
Edith hawke 4 Callington,
I have only looked for the birth of an Edith Hawke on the GRO index with the mmn Pengelly and can't find one. it will be interesting to see in what name these children were registered. (see next post)
They are all together in the 1901 RG13 Piece 2185 Folio 72 Page 15 minus George who is with his aunt Mary.
1911 Thomasine, Mary A, Annie and Edith all still together.Sometimes paranoia is just having all the facts.

Hi Christanel,
Good to know that you are still on the forum. Thank you for the info.
Sould we read anything into the fact that John Reed and Thomasine are clearly together in the 1871 census but appear to be at different locations 10 years later. Is that just a snapshot thing and in reality he travelled between Eascott and Callington ?
However it is strange that they are not shown as being together in any census after 1871 and continue to have children (presumably together) until Edith in 1887.
What I would like to know is this, is Mary A Hawk(e) b 1865 Stoke Climsland Mary Ann Kate Hawk(e) and was it her who married Henry HADLEY? and later Thomas Cox?
On a different subject am I right in thinking that birth certificates were introduced in about 1837? Would these give a precise date of birth? I'm off to do some more hunting on Mary A. Thank you once again.
