    Exclamation Benjamin Powis HORTON missing.

Up until 1895 he had been at Nickless (Farm), Milson, Shropshire with wife Elizabeth and five daughters, in Q3 of that year his youngest daughter Lily Ellen is born but his wife died, then in Q3 1897 Lily died and in Q1 1900 his eldest Louisa Bevan (23) is buried at Nash Chapel (Burford Parish). Nickless is the abode given in school records for his next youngest daughter Edith Annie, she was at the school from 1891 until Aug 1900.

    I can't find him in 1901 or 1911 census.
Nickless is shown as uninhabited in 1901. rg13/2515 Folio 77 page 4 (schedule #25).

I have accounted for surviving daughters in 1901, all FS, one is at Coreley School, at which she was a pupil until the previous year, another is at New House, Mamble and the third is at Stoke House, Greet. He is not with them.

I have found a Q1 1938 death for Benjamin P Horton age 83 registered Ludlow 6a 753, which may or maynot be him, age is right. I have him born Q3 1854.

    Where did he disappear to?

    Regards Malcolm.

    Thanks geneius.

How do you find them? Neither came up in my current search, I'm now using FS and FMP after previously using Anc****y, although I vaguely recall seeing the 1901 one. I think I dismissed it because the whole entry has been scored through, as though the enumerator found some reason that they should not be included after he had already filled in the details. Perhaps he thought they had been included elsewhere.

I don't know why FMP didn't find the 1911 one either, except they have transcribed him as PowEs but they have the surname right. Now I've got to find the two children born to them but not listed. Aaaaagh, its bly infuriating but so addictive.

Birth place is shown as the Town Shropshire which is a little strange

I think at that point he didn't really care. He'd lost his wife and two daughters in the previous four years. He appears to have just walked away. He'd been at Nickless, Milson for 20 years.
I see his new wife filled out the 1911 census. They'd just lost their two sons Dec '10.
I think he was a very sensitive, emotional man.

I too have an interest in a HORTON* family, so adept at using an * instead of the letter H, brings up all sorts of permutations on the name Houghton / Haughton

I also search the year +2 and birth place particularly if it is a village & county on ancestry sometimes < gives a better result. I usually do -/+2 years on birth then extend it....familysearch I use the 10 years between census

    * Samuel Horton Wednesbury 1817 via Derby / Stockport to Warrington

That's very sad - there are some Hortons on my grandmothers side - she was a Wakeman from Shropshire/Worcestershire area. Maybe a distant link

I'm however tracing my grandfathers side and that's enough for now!!!

Just checked up on the family history of Benjamin, in 1861 age 6 he is living with family at his grandparents at The Down, Hopton Wafers. Still, he probably wasn't thinking clearly, so it didn't come across properly.
