Just wondered if anyone had any ideas (as I've run out)!
Trying to find out what my grandad did in the war . I have searched the national archives & the royal engineers museum & his medal role has the victory & British medals 1914/18 RE/104B6,
Name : Alfred Lambert
Corps : RE
Rank: Sapper
Reg no.:WR331571
Born: 7/3/1898
No living relative knows anything & my grandad never talked about it, I understand records were destroyed in the blitz so I'm not holding out much hope but in the 100th anniversary year of the Somme it would be nice to make some more progress, thanks

Ancestry has the WWI war diaries for the Royal Engineers online - my grandfather's army record was one of the many destroyed in the blitz, but I got a reasonable idea of what his unit was up to from reading the diaries.

I'm probably going to regret asking this but how are you sure that this is your Alfred Lambert?

I think what Peter meant was how do you know this Alfred Lambert of the RE was the same Alfred Lambert as your father?
i.e. do you have the medals and have matched the number on them to the record?

Yes 100% , the family have his 2 medals , & the same medal card no. Corresponds with his 2 medal no.s - he started a fitters apprenticeship aged 14 in 1913 on the railways in 'Darlington' - railway town , hence the W&R on the medals, -have I missed anything - please let me know

Not sure what 104B6 means on the medal roll though?
