1870 census RG10/1170/136/4
Family still on Isle of Wight. The fact that the eldest child was born in Hadlow leads me to think that the other children were born in Tonbridge rather than Tunbridge Wells

Wouldn't it be better to get a child's Birth Certificate first as that will have the mother's maiden name on it before getting a Marriage certificate

Edwin John went to Canada first.
Information given to me earlier indicated that both brothers were in Ontario for the 1871 Canada Census.
Edwin is listed in the 1901 Guelph, Ontario, Canada Census with his wife Frances Jackman and family.
It says he and his wife immigrated in 1872. Perhaps he returned to England and married Frances before going back to Canada.
He was working as a "Rent Regulator" in 1901.
There was a younger George Colgate working as a Labourer in Fort Frances that year. It says that he was born in Canada 3 Jun 1873 so he might possibly be a son of Edwin's.
Colgate is not a common name in Canada and is becoming even less common.
None of my generation's Colgate have male children to pass the name on to.
Thank you for your consideration.
