    Hello Pippip55,

    Welcome to British-Genealogy.

What other information do you have on Charles, e.g. birthplace, marriage?
And when you say 'trace', exactly what other information are you looking for? Parents? 1861 census? Telling us precisely what you want saves us telling you details you already know.

What exactly do you want to know? He has a service record on Find My Past - you can buy credits to view it if you are not a member - he was discharged in 1861 - unfit for further service. He looks to have served in the 31st and 53rd Foot rather than 39th. Born in Belfast

    Cheers

Our father has been known to us all our lives as Cyril xxxxxxxx
His father we Knew as Adam James Devine

Recently our father has had to leave his home and in clearing it out we found a few shocks

We found a birth certificate for our father showing the name of Cyril xxxxxxxx
We found he changed his name in 1965 by deed to the name we have always known him by.
We were told our grandfather was Adam Caldwell when he was actually Adam james Devine born in Belfast
We were told our grandfather was an only child when he had a brother Willia m Wilson Devine and a sister Maggie Devine
We were told our married Lucy Dorricott in Liverpool and brought the baby back to Belfast but we can not find a marriage certificate for this marriage

To cap it all we found our grandfathers box which contained a soldiers account book in the name of Charles Caldwell service no 4349 also 5578 we don't know why there were two numbers

Charles Caldwell was born in Belfast in co Antrim in the parish of maharally his trade was a weaver and his last permanent residence in Manchester as our grandfather spent time in Manchester in fact that was where he met his wife
1st regiment on foot he enlisted on 9november in Manchester aged 25

Why did our grandfather Adam James Devine who changed his name to Adam James Caldwell have this book hidden away in his possession

And why did he change his name yo Caldwell we just don't know can you help Alsowe cannot trace a marriage certificate for Adam James Devine or Adam James Caldwell our grandfather

    Hi Pippip
What a mystery you have discovered and what a shock it must have been.
I can see your father's birth registration online which gives his mother's maiden name as Dorricott. What is the father's name on the certificate because I must admit I am getting a little lost.

Our grandmother was Lucy dorricott she had been married to Charles Runbekan but he was dead when our grandfather was conceived she did however give our father the xxxxxxxx name on his birth certificate but he was not the father there was no father listed

We cannot seem to find a marriage certificate for Lucy our grandmother and Adam our grandfather

But the main thing we would like to know is why did our grandfather change his name to Caldwell and he had the soldiers handbook for this Charles Caldwell hidden away

The last page of the service record for Charles Caldwell, 53rd ft. includes an address.

A Charles Caldwell, age 58, born Down, Ireland is living at the same address on the 1891 Census - reference RG12 3190 81 14
