The only James Banfield, born Cornwall, right age, that I can find in other census records is this one in 1901

James Banfield, Widower, age 56, born in Cornwall (Scilly Isles)

    Class: RG13; Piece: 1574; Folio: 52; Page: 28

Hang on - he's also in the 1891

    Class: RG12; Piece: 328; Folio: 39; Page: 23; GSU roll: 6095438

I expect you have seen the 1901 census with a widowed marine engineer James Banfield, born Scilly Isles living West Ham, Essex, age 56

That's the guy I was referring to. Unfortunately he's the wrong one. Further searching shows him as James E Banfield, born Scilly Isles. He's in the '51 with his family

probably not very helpful but in my family tree there are some Cornish miners who emigrated to South America to have a go at silver mining - I believe quite a few did

I saw the James Banfield but discounted him because he was born Scilly Isles.
Are there any lists of miners going to South America?

Do you have his mother in censuses after 1861? Did she marry? Although at the age of 18 I don't see why he would change his name to that of a stepfather unless it was to gain support of some kind.

His brother stayed in Cornwall and I have all the censuses and information about his wife and his children.
I was curious as to what happened with his brother.
