    The Chindits were revered by other units because they disappeared into the jungle and seemed to vanish like smoke. I was told by a Gurkha Quartermaster that Orde Wingate and his Chindits were remembered as almost mythical creatures and were the role models for the Gurkhas. My UNcle who was a Chindit used to say the same about the Gurkhas, that they were held up as role models to the British and seen as fearsome enemies by the Japanese.
    My Uncle would then say," thank heavens I got out alive, let's talk about now" and that was the end of his war stories.
    There are newsreels of the Chindits somewhere on this here intarwebby, I saw then. In fact there is a brief 2 second appearance of my Uncle in one of them when Wingate is inspecting the troops. I will see if I have it bookmarked and get back to you
