Default Joseph or Patrick MALIA, Durham c1895-1917

This man served with the DLI as JOSEPH CLARK and was killed in 1917. A letter from his brother clearly states that his name was JOSEPH PATRICK MALIA, who went to live with his aunt at the age of 14 and was enrolled in the Colliery as CLARK.
So perhaps he got used to using the name. I can find births for JOSEPH and for PATRICK, but not both.

His WW1 Service Record states: enlisted August 1914, age 19y 180d, born Durham. Regt No: 11769 DLI. Next of kin = William CLARK of Easington Colliery (possibly his Uncle?).

Siblings: James MALIA (c1877, served with DLI & Labour - 21290); Thomas MALIA (c1880); Mrs Kate WELFORD (c1884) & Mrs Margaret CUNNNINGHAM or MOORE (c1889).

Joseph Patrick malia was my great uncle, I have been trying to find him for a while after the 1911 census. this is definitely him I would like to see the letter or find out where you got it from I presume it was by my granddad james malia. He had another brother killed in ww1 his name was John Malia 15365 DLI. His surname was also wrong but it has now been changed on the memorial in France by the CWGC. If you could let me see this letter or where I could find a copy I would be most grateful.

    Hello John.
Your great uncle's record (including the letter) is in the WW1 Service Records (collection WO 363), mis-filed in the section for names beginning with the letters CLA.
Do you have access to Ancestry? Get into the CLA section by entering a name (eg Clapp) - then change the page number to 74617. It continues to page 74638.

    Hi John

Glad you've found him! Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier - I've had "one of those days"!

My interest? - None whatsoever, I have no connections to the family.
I just spend every waking minute reading the WW1 Service Records and trying to catalogue them properly ... I know, it's very sad ...

    Jane
