Question Help filling in the blanks my Grandfather WW2

    Help with military records
Hi hope you can help me I'm looking for more detailed information regarding my grandfathers service in WW2

He joined the Gordon Highlanders Aberdeen I think in 1938/39
Early point of the war British Expeditionary Force, was ordered to hold the Germans rear guard and then evacuated

From the UK was then sent to the Desert with Montgomery

The information I do know and looking through this very helpfull web site is
I can see he was mentioned in despatches twice once
Also see that he served in the Middle East, Eygpt, Western Dssert acting Sergeant, then was in Italy, Monte Cassino, Salerno ect Rank Sergeant

I have seen the London Gazette pages but they give no details as to the reason he was mentioned twice I would like to fill in more of the blanks and also the dates of where he was and when during the war

Hope you can help guide me in the right direction

The first thing to do is order a copy of his service record from MoD

Welcome to the British-Genealogy forums Exibit

I think you landed here from Forces War Records so reading This will tell you about us and what we do.

As Peter has said you need to order your grandfather's service records because they are not available online.
You don't need to know his regiment or regimental number but you will need his death certificate and 30 pounds.

    Hi

See if you can find him in here -
    https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/h...rds-1935-1990/
It may possibly give you the reason for the MID.

Also when you get his service papers, they will tell you which Battalion of the Gordons he was in, then the war diaries are at National Archives. You will either then need to go there to view them or pay someone to photo them.

    regards
