Hi, I am trying to find out any details on my Husband's Great Grandfather, whom we have been told was blinded in Boer War.
Details I have - William Woolston Ball born 1865 Ilkeston Derbyshire, I have details of him up until 1881 census, then nothing until 1901 census where he turns up married and has been blind for 8 years. The 1911 census has him widowed and an army pensioner.
Try as I might I can find no details to marriage/military details etc at all for him and do not know where to go from here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

His service record is on Findmypast which is where you should expect it to find it.
He seems to have been discharged suffering from Amaurasis (see Wikipedia)

Is there anyway of finding out if a wife and child were with husband in South Africa? As follow on from my first inquiry about William Ball, I have found out he married in Aldershot July 1890 to Charlotte Walton 1870, they had a child - Emily Agness March 1891 Nuneaton, Warwickshire. I cannot find either of them in census for 1891. Thank you in advance for any help received.

When was the child born? Wouldn't it be useful to know that?
His service record says he was in South Africa from 22 July 1890 to 4 Aug 1892 so if his wife was giving birth in England sometime in Dec 1890 to Mar 1891, it rather suggests they weren't in South Africa. The children were all born in England.

I can find the 1911 census with a housekeeper Eva DAVIS and her children.....
I would suggest that you look at the Army record to establish the dates your man may not have been in the UK and other info about him.
At same time suggest you look at the 1939 Register for Nottingham. You will find both of these on findmypast, the T&C prevent us from giving you the details.
The site offers various means of payment for sight of the record not necessarily an annual subscription, remember to cancel any payment details if you are not continuing with the site!

He's using his middle name "Woolston" on the 1901 census.
