Default Gaol - meaning of Australian Lab 158?

I have a reference from the Gloucestershire Archives for a John Little sent to gaol in 1878. It reads "Australian Lab 158". What does it mean?
    Thanks

    It's entered as 'occupation'.

If the original document is handwritten then it could be a transcription error, although I can't imagine what it might be!

Could the original have been Agricultural Labourer? I have no idea what the 158 might refer to.

I have read in some gaol records the prisoners all have a registry number, or in the event of transportation again a prisoner number.
The record you quote also says lived in "Lydney" in 1878 which I would take for "Sydney".

    I agree with Margarita- 'labourer'

There is a place in Gloucestershire called Lydney, so don't assume a mis-print for Sydney. pwholt

Thanks everyone. The chap I'm interested in was born in Melbourne, Australia. The Gloucester connection, if it is him, is Lydney, Glos. "My chap" led a colourful life, along with his wife, so I wouldn't be surprised if he is the one in gaol. My query is, the meaning of 158?

You would need to see the column heading. All of the prisoners in that record set have a number and 158 is confined to those committed in April/May.
