Welcome to the British-Genealogy forums Paul
I can see a transcript of T Coughlan's service record on Forces War Records and Findmypast but neither have a first name or address.
I assume his death in 1900 in Ladysmith is the Ladysmith in South Africa?
There is a memorial plaque at St Patrick's Cathedral Dublin. for the 5th Lancers.
Are you trying to ascertain if this is your great grandfather or are you sure it is?

Another way is to work back from yourself!
1) Paul COUGHLAN
2) Father COUGHLAN year & place of birth if born after 1911 the birth entry will show the mothers maiden name
3) Grandfather Coughlan marriage ( parents of 2) and with luck you will have a maiden name
4) gt grandfather & date of birth and with luck you maybe on the 1911 census
I am assuming that most of the events will be UK based....try this site www.freebmd.org.uk
If you get stuck post and someone will help you or PM chistanel or myself and we will help you get the info you want...please bear in mind no info about the living....

Christine is quite correct, his Christian name was Tim & he died 17 February 1900. His name also appears on the regimental wall plate in the All Saints Church in Ladysmith plus the main monument at Intombi Camp nearby.
