Do not underestimate the possibilities of the family notices in newspapers, especially before BMDs and the census... For example, the following is from "Saunder's Newsletter" of 1804. Not the man I was looking for, but too good an entry to miss!

"MARRIED. St. John's church. Wakefield, Mr. Barber, whitesmith, aged 77 to Miss Tinker Woodnock, aged 23: the match was made while the bride was getting a shuttle repaired by the bridegroom.—At Grainthorp, Lincolnshire, Mr John Clay, to Mrs. Eliza Nieve, whose ages with that of the bridesmaid amounted to 213 years —At Tarvin, Mr. George Green, of Overton, near Frodsham, to Miss Wilkson of Tarvin, whose ages make the agregate of 140, being her Fourth husband, and his fifth wife."
