Hi, on a marriage cert I've got from 1919, the man's occupation is a Striker, does anyone know what this is/was? His father before him was a signalman and I know working on railways ran in the family. So would a stiker be rail related?
Any advice appreciated - thank you!

A 'Striker' would normally be a Blacksmiths assistance, although I suppose the term could also be used in other ways.

Black Smiths run in my family, found one of them on the census for the Isle of White, living in Lodgings, Occupation a Hammer Man. at that time they where building the Railway.
If he was working on the Railways then he would probably be one of a Gang laying the Rail lines.

I have only come across striker in relation to smithery of one sort or another - anything involving a forge.
