My great uncle joined the army in 1916. I have an undated picture of him in uniform. The cap badge appears to match that of The Queens Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). For a long time I could not find any service records for him and then by chance I saw an RFC/RAF record which shows him having transfered to the RFC in Feb 1918 and then the RAF in Apr 1918.
The record shows he moved from 4 ARD to AR Sch Ux on 4. 12. 18 and later to C Palace DC on 8. 5. 19
There is no mention of The Queens (RWK Reg) on this form?
Can anyone decifer the abbreviations above please?
His name is Alexander Edmund Harris (DOB 1885) and soldier # is 130681.
Many thanks

Not the whole thing, but this might move you a bit forward.
4 ARD to AR Sch Ux
A = Air, or more likely Aerial
R = could be Research (Aerial photography was in its infancy, but even then a vital tool)
= could also be Refueling - really primitive in those days - jerrycans passed down on ropes
D = Detachment (often, and still, treated as a station within a station)
Sch = School (almost definitely)
Ux = Uxbridge (was still an RAF station in 1982)
C Palace DC = In 1919, probably Crystal Palace Demobilisation Camp
Hope it helps
Regards

Thanks Kiltpin. His occupation was carpenter and I wondered if that's why he moved from Queens Own (Royal Kent) to RFC knowing that in those days planes had a lot of wood structures. I've not been able to find his pre - RFC army record?
