    Post Silverfox

My 5th Great Grandmother Ann Davie (or Davey)was I think baptised in Fremington on 15th May 1745, she gave birth to a base son in 1771 - the child George Davey was baptised on April of that year, in Fremington. I clearly do not have the name of father of the child so any thoughts on that would be a help. Plus any information on her subsequent marriage and or her death would be very much appreciated. I think that she did get married as I can find no record of her death under any iteration of the Davey name, any help or advice would be very much gratefully received - thank you.

Welcome to British Genealogy - our members love a challenge, so don't give up hope yet.

However, I'm an escapee from the Scottish section, so the best that I can offer is the suggestion that if all else fails, you could ask the Devon FHS for help - they're HERE.

    Default North Devon Records

Hi Silverfox, and a very warm welcome to Brit Gen...

As you probably know, Fremington is a small village just to the west of Barnstaple, in North Devon. Archives for North Devon are, on the whole, held at the North Devon Record Office, which is in Barnstaple. But bear in mind that Devon is a very big county and there are several Record Offices, so the best place to start your searches would be on Suzanne Brown's Ancestor Search website, which gives details of all these ROs: https://www.ancestor-search.info/CRO-Devon.htm.

The Devon Online Parish Clerk [OPC] project is quite active but, alas, does not yet cover Fremington. However, here is a link to the Devon OPC page on GENUKI: https://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/OPCproject.html.

GENUKI is a wonderful trove of info, which is all provided by volunteers. It can take a while to learn how to use the site - for one thing, some counties are better served than others - but it really is worth the time taken.

Here is GENUKI on Fremington: https://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/Fremi...#ChurchRecords.

And, as Lesley wisely says, have a look at what the Devon FHS can offer.

Please let us know how you get on and come back with as many questions as you like - Brit Gen thrives on constant curiosity (because that is the only way to get anywhere!).

    Swooping off now.

Thanks very much for the encouragement - I am a member of Find my Past and have had significant success with their record sets but obviously because of the limit detail and the age of the records, positive identification is difficult nonetheless if I can find marriage details this will hopefully confirm Ann's parents and enable me to go back one more generation with some confidence.
