    Default Bartholomew McCarthy

Bartholomew McCarthy was one of the sponsors at Susan Mason's baptism in Adelaide, South Australia in 1848. But the only mention I can find of a Batholomew McCarthy in SA at the time was Bartholomew Joseph, the son of Lawrence McCarthy who arrived in SA in 1839. He seems to have been born about 1838, according to his death notice in the papers, which would make him only ten or eleven years old in 1848.

From what I can see online, sponsors at a Catholic baptism have to be at least 16 years old. Does anyone know if things were different in South Australia in the past?

Hello.. it may be worthwhile sending an email to either SA Family History Society or Genealogy SA (find them on Google) and asking if anyone can help you.
