    Default Nicholson family of Croydon

Seeking descendants or information relating to John Nicholson (1817-1879)and his wife Mary Chandler (1813-1860's) who were married at St Mary's, Lambeth, Surrey. They had 10 children, Robert, Emily, Sarah, Mary, Susan, Eliza, Louisa, Jane, Fanny and Elizabeth (who I believe was married to a Jackson).
For the 1871 census John and his second wife Amelia etc were living at 1 Croydon Crst., Broad Green, Croydon, Surrey.
Does anyone know if this location could be found today or even a close proximity. My grandmother Mary Jane Nicholson was living there at that time aged 4 years. Mary migrated to Australia in 1883.
The Nicholson family was living in Handcraft Road, Croydon, Surrey at the time of the 1861 census with John being described as a drover.
Any information on the Nicholson family would be greatly appreciated as I hope to touch the soil of Croydon in the summer of 2017. ... Ken Halliday, Tenterfield, Australia

Using Google maps and Google Earth,1851 address is Broad Green Avenue which is shown on both sources.

You will find it easier to touch tarmac or concrete: what was once a Surrey village is now a London borough. It's so long since I was there that I really don't remember if there is anything left of old times...

The 1861 address is Handcroft Road, which is still there. From what I remember when I was nearby some years ago, the houses are fairly old, but I can't say whether they go back to 1861.

Ward's Croydon directories for the 1870s reveal that "Crst" should be Cott(ages). John Nicholson is shown at 1 Croydon Cottages up to 1880 (obviously compiled just before his death). The cottages were on the NE side of the road called "Broad Green", now rolled into London Road, between the junctions with Elmwood Road and St James's Road, running:
    [Elmwood Rd]
    36 Broad Green
    1 Croydon Cottages
    ...
    9 Croydon Cottages
    ... ...
    [St James's Rd]

The present Broad Green Avenue did not exist.

    Hi Ken,

Here is an ordnance survey map of Croydon 1867/68:

    https://maps.nls.uk/view/102347448

You need to zoom in to the area below the 'R' of the lighter coloured word CROYDON written across the map. This link should work to zoom:

In 1871, I think the census progression was:

Up left/south side of London Road - Broad Green House - London Road
Cross over to right side of London Road at Bensham Lane and head back to Broad Green - Croydon Cottages? - Broad Green - Rising Sun (public house) - The Star (public house) - Broad Green Place, then on toward the Station House, Oakfield Road and Lennard Road.

So I think your address would be before the two pubs around the site of the arrow on this pic:

The site of Broad Green House, Broad Green Place, and both the pubs can be identified today, and there is some info here about the modern streets which now cover the area.

    ...and the pubs

The Star became the Broadgreen Tavern, also now closed.

This book is quite good. You can do a word search for Broad Green and see some interesting snippets about the area.

Thanks for this information and links. I am not the best with Google street maps but will persist. Look forward to reading in detail the book on Croydon from the archives. Thanks again, Ken
