Default PHILIP DAVID JACOBS-HARRIETTE MATILDA NERWICH

This new threads provides some data on the children of Philip David Jacobs 1849-1923 and Harriette Matilda Nerwich who died in 1930. I had previously posted some time ago small amounts of data on Philip and Harriette including census and other records but had not looked in detail at their children.
I will post links to the earlier data and also on the parents of Harriett. Philip David Jacobs was the son of David Jacobs 1820-1869 and Matilda Rebecca Jacobs 1822-1888. See GRO Birth Index for Philip Jacobs March qtr 1849 St Martins 1 135 and his death Dec qtr 1923 Philip D Jacobs age 76 Lambeth 1d 251.
In earlier posts I had identified that Philip and Harriette appeared to have separated circa 1900s or earlier. During that period Harriette and her children adopted the surname JAMES. The reason for this change of surname is unknown but may have been due to the separation and bankruptcy of Philip.
When Harriette died in 1930 her probate indicated her name change- Probate Harriett Matilda Jacobs or JAMES Fitzroy House Regency Square Brighton widow died 6 January 1930 at St.Georges Home Hurstpierpoint Sussex Administration to Ernest JAMES chartered accountant Effects £591.6s 10d

As other records will confirm the surname change was adopted by several of her children if not all.
The children of Philip and Harriette were Ethel Lizzie Jacobs March qtr 1873 Strand 1b 623; David Ernest Jacobs March qtr 1874 Strand 1b 610; Daisy Hilda Jacobs March qtr 1876 Kensington 1a 45; Cyril Henry Jacobs March qtr 1881 Kensington 1a 28A;Winifred May Jacobs Sept qtr 1887 Isle of Wight 2b 637.
In the New York Court Case reported in the New York Times January 1906 involving the estate of Angel Henry Jacobs a significant number of plaintiffs were identified including Jacobs, Nerwich and related family members. The names included Philip D Jacobs; Harriett M Jacobs; David Ernest Jacobs known as Ernest JAMES; Daisy Hilda Jacobs; Ethel Izzie Jacobs;Winifred May Jacobs; Cyril Henry Jacobs.
It has proved very difficult to locate census and other records on Harriett and her children post separation from Philip. However, Probate records provide some clues to where some of the children were living at the time of their death- Probate Ethel Lizzie Jacobs or Ethel Lizzie JAMES of Horton Hospital Epsom Surrey spinster died 7 April 1953 Admin to Montague Cooper chartered accountant attorney of Cyril Henry JAMES Effects £707.6s5d further grant 31 October 1953.

Probate Cyril Henry JAMES 10 The Mumbles Gillespie Street Durban Natal South Africa died 17 July 1953 Admin to Montague Cooper chartered accountant attorney of James Allen PERRIDGE £264 5s 3d

Probate Winifred May JAMES Albany Hotel 74 Cromwell Road Earles Court spinster died 3 January 1934 Warrington Lodge Nursing Home Warrington Crescent Middlesex Admin to Ethel JAMES spinster £63 7s

The UK Passenger Lists show- Cyril Henry JAMES single clerk b abt 1881 Departed London for Cape Town on the "Wilcannia" 6 November 1909

    The 1901 Census ( Crown Copyright TNA) RG13 8 51 36 36 Clifton Gardens Paddington shows- Cyril H Jacobs boarder s 20 clerk Commercial b London; Harriet M Jacobs boarder M 42 b Ireland; Winifred M Jacobs s 21 b London Governess school

    I will post further.
