EDWIN ISAACS- ROSA & BERTHA HAUER

This new thread is part of the ongoing research into the Hauer/Simmons/Jacobs and associated families. The thread should be read in conjunction with earlier threads on Coleman Simmonds; Wolf Simmonds and the related Jacobs lines. The following data is a work in progress on the specific line of Rosa and her sister Bertha Rebecca who both married Edwin Isaacs. The current data on the lines is based on an early typed account which also included reference to family papers and records.
Currently there is limited data on Edwin Isaacs other than he was born in London circa 1840 and settled in Haiti before later moving to Hamburg where he died in 1896. He married Rosa Hauer 1837-1855 daughter of Wolf Hauer 1812-1862 and Sophie Victor 1813-1877. Rosa died of yellow fever in Port Au Prince Haiti. The age of marriage for Edwin is given in the family data as approximately 13 years which although not uncommon for the time may be a suspect dob.
Following the death of Rosa, Edwin married her sister Bertha Rebecca Hauer in 1863.
The probate for Edwin Isaacs shows- Edwin Isaacs of Hamburg Germany merchant died 11 November 1896. Administration to Hermann Meyer manager of the Hanseatic bank limited the attorney of Bertha Rebecca Isaacs widow Effects £102.10s.

The family records for Edwin record a daughter Elise who married Egon SINGER and Rosa who married a VELEZ. However, the German Birth Records indicate other children.
There is a birth record for Reinhard Emile Isaacs 5 Sept 1876 Hamburg with parents Edwin Isaacs occupation Kaufmann and wife Bertha nee Hauer and for Nelly Angelina b 23 Oct 1878 Hamburg.
Nelly was to marry Siegmund ROSENKRANZ 1871-1930. Nelly and Siegmund moved to Londopn and had 2 children - Walter and Kathe ( Katie) 1904-1998.
The death year for Bertha Isaacs was recorded in the family tree data as 1931 London however, there is no comparable death index record. The closest Death Index record is Death Bertha Isaacs Dec qtr 1928 age 79 Wandsworth 1d 581.

In researching the Edwin Isaacs and Rosa and Bertha Hauer lines there is a detailed account of the Oskar Rosenkranz the brother of Siegmund. This account relates to the Stolpersteine Hamburg records and accounts of the murder of Oskar and his wife Else Levy in Chelmno in 1942. This record also gives an account of Siegmund and his wife Nelly Angelina and also refers to Nelly's father as being a British Consul. However, the Kaufmannisches Adressbuch von Hamburg Altona und Ottensen, 1886 show records for Edwin Angel Isaacs General Consul der Republik Bolvia Pferdemarkt 56 and in the same year Edwin Angel Isaacs Vice Consul of Peru.

Currently, I can see no record for an Edwin Isaacs British Consul but not all records are available.

The Menorah Vol 22 Jewish Chautauqua Society, 1897 contains a report on the death of Edwin Angel Isaacs. It should be emphasised that further research is needed to confirm that Edwin Angel Isaacs and Edwin Isaacs of London, Haitii and Hamburg are one in the same but based on current evidence it appears that they are.
"Mr Edwin Angel Isaacs a native of London who resided in Hamburg for the last 33 years died there recently aged 67. The deceased was the head of the exporting house E.Isaacs and for nearly a quarter of a century he represented the Central American and South American states as Consul in his adopted town. He was successively consul of Columbia and at the same time Consul General of Paraguay, consul of the Argentine Republic of Ecuador, of Bolivia and lately consul of San Salvador and Vice consul of Peru."

If it appears that Edwin Isaacs and Edwin Angel Isaacs are one in the same then the family history which indicates his dob as 1840 London is significantly incorrect and his real dob was 1829. The dob for 1829 appears to be far more realistic given a suggested age of 13 at the time of his marriage to Rosa Hauer.

The New York Passenger Lists 1820-1957 indicate Edwin A Isaacs -merchant b abt 1830 age 25 Place of Origin London Port of Departure Port au Prince Haiti Port of Arrival New York- Ship Clara Windsor.
This record suggests that Edwin Angel Isaacs was the same Edwin who married Rosa and Bertha Hauer and was the father of Nelly and Reinhard among others.

The following data is an update regarding Julia Elise Isaacs daughter of Edwin and Bertha Isaacs. Rio de Janeiro Brazil Immigration Cards 1900-1965 record- Julia "Sara" Elise Singer Hamburg Parents Edwin and Bertha Isaacs Residence Berlin 5.1.1939- there is a photograph of Julia.A similar record exists for Leopold "Israel" Singer born Breslau 18.2.1862 Parents Samuel and Rosalie Singer. The Nazis imposed the inclusion of Sara for female Jews and Israel for male Jews on all records by Jan 1 1939 to distinguish "Non Jewish Origins".
Leopold Franz Leopold b 23.8.1897 the son of Julia and Leopold also immigrated to Brazil 29 January 1940.
The Marriage Record of Julia and Leopold 27 April 1892 Hamburg - Leopold Singer b 18 Feb 1862 age 30 Parents Samuel Singer; Rosalie Bil?- Julia Elise Isaacs age 25 b 10 April 1867 Parents Edwin Isaacs; Bertha Rebecca Hauer.

I have yet to trace further records on Leopold, Julia and Leopold Franz Singer.
