    Default Late Gloucestershire Baptisms

As I am going through Gloucestershire parish registers, I will make a not of any late baptisms that may be useful. I did think that maybe Ancestry's index to the Gloucester registers may pick up on the year of birth, but I didn't get a hit on one (very clearly written) entry!

Parish of St. Mary the Virgin, Kingswood near Wotton under Edge (was Wiltshire but in the Gloucester Parish Registers on Ancestry)

1795 July 12th Elizabeth daughter of Thomas & Sarah WEBB about 15 years old baptised [Pg. 32 image 34 of 112]*
1799 February 7th Martha daughter of George & Priscilla LEONARD about 15 years baptised [Pg. 35 image 37 of 112]
1799 August 4th Ann daughter of Richard & Sarah BISHOP being 9 years old baptised [Pg. 35 image 37 of 112]
1802 April 4th Martha daughter Thomas & Martha HANCOCK born August 29th 1788 baptised [Pg. 37 image 39 of 112]
1802 April 4th Mary Ann daughter Thomas & Martha HANCOCK born September 14th 1790 baptised [Pg. 37 image 39 of 112]
1802 April 4th George Thomas son Thomas & Martha HANCOCK born September 17th 1793 baptised [Pg. 37 image 39 of 112]

1809 October 25th Ann daughter Benjamin & Edith TIPPINS aged 48 years baptised [Pg. 45 image 47 of 112]*
1810 November 11th William son of Daniel & Susanna HAYNES aged 13 years baptised [Pg. 46 image 48 of 112]

*interestingly an Ann TIPPINS was buried 30th October 1809 at St. Mary the Virgin, Kingswood near Wotton under Edge

I did a search on Ancestry on Ann TIPPINS ( with birth of 1760 +/- 1 year) to check to see if she came up in the search engine...and she did - but only the Bishop Transcripts register came up, not the original register.

I searched the HANCOCK siblings using their exact year of births and none of them came up at all when searched in Ancestry. But they did come up if I put their year of birth as 1802!!! Again, only the Bishop's Transcripts register.

These should be of help to some one. One query: on the Tetbury entries for 1791, you have a girl Eliza Jane Underwood as a daughter of Elenor Boxwell. Do you think this is a surname ( or middle name) or is it a place name? There is no punctuation to make it clear which is the case. There is a parish of Boxwell with Leighterton in the Tetbury registration district, so relatively closeby. pwholt

The actual entry states " Elizt (t superscript) Jane daughter of Stephen Underwood and Mary Boxwell his wife aged 10 years" baptised 25th December 1791 [image 659 of 751]

I interpret it as Underwood is Stephen's middle-name and the surname is Boxwell or Stephen UNDERWOOD and Mary BOXWELL were unmarried at the time of Elizabeth Jane's birth circa 1781 but subsequently married. It could also be UNDERWOOD is the surname and Boxwell is Mary's middle-name.

previous entries are in the format eg "John son of John JONES & Mary his wife" or "John son of John & Mary JONES"

If Boxwell was the parish they were residing, then I would have expected the entry to say "of Boxwell".

I think the only way to know for sure is to look for a possible marriage of the couple, and any other children born subsequent to the marriage.
