    Default Café Royal in Epsom

My great grandmother Sarah Ada Peskett is listed as living at the Café Royal on Malden Road in Epsom, Surrey from 1918 until 1928, but I can find no mention of this establishment online. The Ancestry electoral rolls do not provide an exact address other than Malden Road. I'm wondering if anyone may have knowledge or recollections of such a place. Was it just a small café or chippy?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

A good place to look is the trade directories that were published regularly - essentially the forerunners of the Yellow Pages phone books published in the UK today. There's quite a few collections online, one of the best is at the University of Leicester HERE, but there are others.

I think Malden Road was in Cheam, not in Epsom.

    Thanks for the link Lesley,

Using it I found the Kelly's directory of Surrey for 1913 that lists a Café Royal Ltd, 80 North End Croydon under refreshment rooms. It is possible that this is where the Café was situated in 1913 and then moved that where my great grandmother was at five years later in Malden Road. Google maps show it's under eight miles away.

Not sure where to go with that, but it would tend to imply that the Café Royal had been around for a while.

    Thanks,
    Gerald

It actually says Cafe Royal Croydon Limited.

There were dozens of Cafe Royals all over the country.
