Default Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland

Peter Calver of Lost Cousins in his latest newsletter has identified that John Burke, who is best known for Burke's Peerage, also produced between 1834-38 a 4-volume work entitled A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland Enjoying Territorial Possessions or High Official Rank; but Uninvested with Heritable Honours.

All 4 volumes are available free through Google Books:

    Volume I https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=Q...page&q&f=false

    Volume II https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=F...page&q&f=false

    Volume III https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=g...page&q&f=false

    Volume IV https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=a...page&q&f=false

I have just had a quick look at Volume 1 and on the first page found:

"BASTARD OF KITLEY. - the Hon. Anne-Jane, wife of the present Mr Bastard of Kitley, died in 1833"

From a very quick check on Ancestry I am surprised how many families of that name there were/are. Just goes to show, one should never assume anything!

And anyone could say, to the members of this family, with truth and conviction " you are a Bastard!"
