I just did a long speil about the GRO index now having the mother's maiden names in their birth entries and then lost the lot.
What it boiled down to was the son Frederick William, age 14, of Henry and Lily in the 1911 census has the mmn Taylor registration district Malling and so does the birth reg of Arthur June 1/4 1895 Malling. This is the only suitable birth reg even though it is 1 year earlier than the age given in 1911. They weren't as fussed about ages back then.
A Henry Newman married a Lily Taylor Sept 1/4 1895 Tonbridge. No Violet as middle name on the marriage reg so Lily appears to have adopted it between her marriage and the 1911 census. Maybe for some reason they also decided to give Arthur the name of George after his birth reg.
So if he attested it could be in the name of Arthur.

Ernest Hugh Newman age 35 on the 1911 son from Henry's first marriage, birth reg March 1/4 1873 Tonbridge mmn Towner.

Hopefully John will come back and let us know if he cleared up the mystery.
