    Hi Sandyhall,

l'm not surprised that you couldn't find anything about Thomas in the Census, being a master mariner he spent most of his time at sea and l've never found him mentioned anywhere other than the same places as you've found. l've traced all his voyages back and forth to the West Indies but nothing about his life when he came home to the East End, though his second marriage is traceable much easier than his first which is the one that interests me.

lt's strange though that he marries Elizabeth in St. George in the East but his children were baptised in St. Botolph, and he married Sarah Huckell his second wife there too, so he must have had an attachment to the place somehow.

Thanks so much for your help,

    Valman

    Hi janbooth,

l hadn't though of that connection, been too busy searching for her baptisim with what l thought was her father's name of William but now l realise that it could have been anyone and not her father who witnessed their marriage. l'll have to check out that baptism see what l can find about the family. l'd hadn't realised that Hermitage Street was that close to St. Botolph that would make sense as to how she met Thomas. l had noticed that remark about her going out when well, you could be right and she was in the infirmary at the time. l had visions of her being in the Stepney or Whitechapel workhouse and wondering what had happened to the children. lt looks like l've more ideas now to follow up thanks to everyone on here.
