Looking for biographical information on George Byam who dedicated his book [Wild life in Central America, 1849] to Major William Frazer of the 43rd Light Infantry and signed it 'late 43rd'.
Thank you.

London Gazette
Hi Consignee and a very warm welcome to Brit Gen...
This might be of interest - it's a reference to a (Major)-General Frazer who was severely wounded in November 1804, in action three miles south-west of Deeg in India: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/...15801/page/565. If you go back to the Search page on the website and try again for him, you will see what look like references to promotions in the 1790s. (When reading these very old copies of the London Gazette remember that a long 's' was used in many places - looks like an 'f'.)
I also found general info about the regiment on the website https://www.napoleon-series.org. The big problem when searching for the regiment is that it seems to be very popular with re-enactment societies. You have been warned...
Will try to find something on George Byam.

Arthur Collin's "Peerage of England", published 1779, in listing descendant's of the Earl of Bathurst refers to a marriage "Louisa to George Byam of the Island of Antigua". Doesn't give a date but probably around 1750 - 1760 - so, not George of the 43rd.
Wonder if there is a link with the Antigua estate and the George died 1853??"dyfal donc a dyr y garreg"

For anyone interested about George and Louisa Byam of Antigua:
"The Byam Family" painted by Thomas Gainsborough circa 1762-1766 and features George and Louisa Byam of Antigua, the information on that reads:
"George Byam, painted in Gainsborough's Bath studio with his wife Louisa and daughter Selina, was the son of a sugar plantation owner and colonial official from Antigua. In 1763, the Byams' sugar plantation was one of the largest on the island, worked by 132 slaves."
The George in the painting was born in Antigua, the eldest son of George Byam (1704-*34) and Henrietta-Maria, the daughter of Colonel John Frye of Antigua. It is unlikely that George Byam the younger left Antigua much before the outbreak of war in 1758; he probably married Louisa Bathurst very soon after he arrived in England.

Many thanks for this definitive information and greatly appreciate your time to reply. Shall see if the parish records are digitised which may give his date of birth.
Am cataloguing first editions of both books written by George Byam and want to give some biographical information about the good Captain.

Antigua & the Antiguans, 1844
Hi again
Thanks for the info about George Byam. It has been very helpful and I have now just found a copy of Antigua & the Antiguans, published in 1844, on Project Gutenberg. Here's the link: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/38789...-h/38789-h.htm. The book's blurb says: "A full account of the colony and its inhabitants from the time of the Caribs to the present day."
If you scroll down a bit, you will find that there is a section about the Byam family, and George is mentioned. (But perhaps you already know all about this? In which case, forgive this duplication.)
Better get lunch now.
